Valentine's Day - it's a great day to remind us of how much we love our partners and an opportunity to show them just how much. The trick is to make the day special and add some personal touches.

An excellent excuse for a Romantic Picnic or a drive to nearby country town or a leisurely lunch at a nice Café.

Romantic Gift Ideas

The best gift you can give is a gift from the heart. I love the single red rose, simple and romantic (just a tad cliché though). This isn't about how much you spend at the shops (unless it's a diamond, then the bigger the better!). Perhaps leave the 365 days of love messages in a jar, in the shop – very cute but umm a bit soppy!

Creative Gift Ideas for Her

  • Instead of buying perfume (most of us have enough), buy an old fashioned perfume bottle (even better, buy both)

  • Take her for a day shopping at the markets or antique stores and she can pick out her own gift

  • Jewellery – can't go wrong here

  • Ticket to the movies (her choice of course)

  • Personalised Gift Certificate – a 30 minute massage, lunch at an outdoor cafe, facial or ½ day trip to a day spa

Creative Gift Ideas for Him

Buying valentine presents for men is tricky at the best of times. Keep it simple and thoughtful and you can't go wrong.

  • Glass jar or tin and fill with his favourite sweets. Add a red ribbon and a nice card.

  • Ticket to Swim with the sharks

  • Sport mad? Tickets to favourite game, fishing charter,a golf session with a pro, football signed by (someone famous that plays football!)

  • Concert tickets (buy two and you get to go also… note, only give him one ticket as he may mistakenly think he can take a mate ;)

  • Love Coupons for valentines day makes a fun gift too. type up some coupons, cut and staple together. Ideas for your coupons include: back massage, bake a cake, do his chores, cook his favourite meal...

Whatever gift you choose – add a personalized Gift Certificate – it doesn't have to cost much (if anything) and it's a "Gift from the Heart".

Personalise your own Gift Certificate or choose one here that I have made up for you.

Rather than buying the gift mentioned on the Gift Certificate, you are saying "choose your own (gift as mentioned) with my blessing" They also make great last minute valentine gifts.

Valentine Day Ideas if you're Single

If you're single, Valentines Day is the perfect opportunity to ask that someone you are keen on out on a date – or you could just send them the traditional anonymous Valentines Card or even Valentines ecards (I'd prefer the stamp and post it variety, more romantic). Na, ask them out, go on!

Romantic Dinner Ideas

  • Book early if you want to go to the best restaurant in town.

  • Try and find a quaint restaurant instead – you may need to drive a few hours but it will be worth it.

  • Bed and Breakfast places quite often supply dinner – and a romantic night sleep to go with it.

  • Go on a wine tasting tour or plan your own at home

  • What about a romantic meal at home – choose the menu by combining both of your favourite dishes.
Dust of the crystal glasses and fine china and set the table with candles of course. Dress up as if you were going out for the evening. Make sure you have the music ready for some after dinner dancing.

More Valentine Day Ideas:

Add some more personalised touches: Put rose petals on the bed and a heart shaped soap on the vanity, a love note under the pillow, email one or two valentines day e cards during the day.

Got kids? You can still have a romantic meal at home.

Get the kids to help set the table to get them involved. Give them a card (you'll find free Printable Valentine Cards here) and a small red heart chocolate so they don't feel left out. Make their favourite dish too. When the kids are in bed then it’s your turn to have your candle lit dinner for two, followed by dancing the night away in the lounge room…

Get Creative when thinking of Valentines Day Ideas

OK, so this site is about Creative Party Theme Ideas so if a Candlelit dinner is too cliché for you, then here are some other suggestions:

  • sleep in and then go out for brekky at a nice café. There’s something special about someone else cooking your breakfast

  • Lunch- try a Romantic Picnic - we all love picnics

  • have a romantic dinner at home as mentioned above.

  • Why not make the whole day romantic – Brekky at a café, picnic lunch, romantic dinner at home.

  • Spend the day at the markets, or hunting through antique shops.

  • Plan a weekend away at a cosy B&B

  • Do something different together – go bowling, go-karting, bungee jump, go to theme park and go on all the kids rides – be a bit silly and have fun!!!

  • Write a love letter – tie it with a red ribbon or put in a nice bottle (message in a bottle… aaww)

Cheap Valentines Ideas?

Make each others Printable Valentine Cards and gift – guys can get very creative given the chance. If buying a gift instead, put a spending limit of $5 on the gift and it must be something other than chocolates or flowers.

Many of the ideas above don't cost much: breakfast instead of dinner, love letter, romantic picnic in the park, strolling through the markets, dinner at home – wow, there’s a whole romantic day itinerary just there!.

Partner away or on a business trip?

Make a parcel they can take with them to be opened on the day. You can include a card, letter, gift, a DVD to watch together when he returns, a photo of you, add a silk rose and oh so romantic.

Be Thoughtful

The main thing for planning the day and the gift is the thought that has gone into it. Add some special touches… Knowing what your partner's favourites are will show that you care (and listen occasionally!). Here are some ideas:
  • if you're going to do traditional – do it well, buy a quality card and some really, really nice chocolates.

  • Add a romantic quote and a gift certificate in your card – you'll find some romantic quotes below.
  • Cook his favourite meal (and your favourite dessert, this is about both of you!)

Oh and Valentines flowers - may be cliche - but you won't get any complaints ;)

Love Quotes for Valentines Day

If you're looking for free valentines greetings here are a few of my favourites.

"Keep your eyes upon me, keep me in your sight, Help me down the crooked road, lead me to the light. The road I'm on is dark, I'm not sure if I know the way, Yet with you right beside me, I'm certain I won't stray. Protect me from the world, I know we'll make it through, Give me all the strength I need..... Let me lean on you."
